Two pickleball paddles and three balls on a court

Boca Grande has a lot to show off, and Lee County wants you to come see it. The public is invited to a ribbon cutting at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 13, at Wheeler Road Community Park, 305 Wheeler Road, Boca Grande. Lee County Commissioners and other officials will say a few words.

NEW COURTS AT WHEELER ROAD

The star of the day is the park’s new pickleball courts, which opened for play in June. Two worn-out tennis courts were replaced with two new tennis courts, and three new pickleball courts were added. The park also got new parking spaces, sidewalks, fencing, lighting, shade structures and another restroom. The shade structures inside the Boca Grande Dog Park were repainted, too.

HURRICANE REPAIRS AND MORE

The county also worked with the Friends of Boca Grande Community Center on several projects paid for by community donations. The Crowninshield House was repaired after Hurricanes Helene and Milton and is now home to the Historic Society. The Island School added its own lunchroom, more office space and a fire sprinkler system. The Community Center was repaired and renovated, with a new sidewalk, better drainage, new landscaping and golf cart parking.

On Belcher Road, boulders now keep cars off the beach, and a repaved turnaround means drivers no longer have to back into people’s driveways.

BOOKS ON WHEELS

The Johann Fust Community Library now has a Book Bike, thanks to a gift from the Triad Foundation. It brings books, library card sign-ups, crafts and tech to the bike path, the farmers market and community events. The park also has a new emergency cabinet with an AED and a Stop the Bleed kit.

Parking is free at Wheeler Road Community Park. Can’t make it? The ceremony will stream live on Lee County’s YouTube and Facebook pages.

Mark one more date: the Friends will hold a beam signing for the island’s new theater at 10 a.m. Nov. 19 at Friends Pavilion, 131 First St.
