Fort Myers Councilperson Teresa Watkins Brown has earned the Gold Certificate of Excellence from the Florida League of Cities, the top level in the League’s training program for elected city officials.
The program rewards local leaders who keep learning while they serve. It has three levels: a Bronze Certificate of Merit, a Silver Certificate of Leadership and a Gold Certificate of Excellence.
Watkins Brown finished the program in its first year, which ran from August 2025 through July 2026. Officials earn points by taking part in League training, including monthly webinars, online orientation, the Institute for Elected Municipal Officials, state-required ethics education, and the League’s annual conference and legislative events.
“I am honored to receive the Gold Certificate of Excellence and proud to have completed the program in its inaugural year,” Watkins Brown said. “Continuing education strengthens my ability to make informed decisions, address the needs of our residents and help move the City of Fort Myers forward. I am grateful to the Florida League of Cities for providing municipal leaders with opportunities to grow and better serve our communities.”
Holly D. Smith, the League’s 2025-2026 president and a Sanibel councilwoman, said the program is meant to keep city leaders sharp.
“The Florida League of Cities remains committed to providing valuable educational opportunities for municipal leaders throughout their public service journey,” Smith said. “The elected officials recognized through this program have demonstrated the importance of expanding their knowledge and enhancing their ability to serve their residents and communities.”
