FORT MYERS, Fla. — Gulf Coast Humane Society (GCHS) is wrapping up its month-long participation in the nationwide Clear the Shelters campaign with a fee-waived adoption weekend from Friday, Aug. 28, through Sunday, Aug. 30.

All adoption fees will be waived throughout the weekend as GCHS celebrates the final days of the campaign and encourages local families to meet the pets currently waiting for new homes.

As an added bonus, every adopter will receive one month of free pet food, generously provided by GCHS’ friends at Royal Canin, helping families get their new pets off to a healthy start.

The weekend will culminate with a fun-filled Back-to-School Fair on Saturday, Aug. 29, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The family-friendly event will take place in the grassy area behind the GCHS veterinary clinic and will feature activities for kids, parents, pets and the entire family.

Back-to-School Fair highlights include:

  • Free back-to-school photos for all members of the family
  • Back-to-school supplies and fun activities for children.
  • Local vendors and community partners.
  • Members of South Trail Fire Department on-site for a special opportunity to meet local firefighters and have the firefighters calendar autographed.
  • Plenty of opportunities to meet adoptable pets and learn more about responsible pet ownership.

“Clear the Shelters has been a month-long effort to shine a spotlight on shelter pets, and we wanted to end it in a big way,” said Darcy Andrade, CEO of Gulf Coast Humane Society. “Waiving adoption fees isn’t about the cost of the adoption itself; it’s about removing a barrier and giving people another reason to come through our doors and meet the pets waiting for new homes. With our rescheduled Back-to-School Fair happening just across the street at our veterinary clinic, it’s a great way to bring the community together and wrap up Clear the Shelters with a fun weekend for families and pets.”

GCHS encourages families considering adoption to visit throughout the weekend. With adoption fees waived and a month of food provided by Royal Canin, the organization hopes to remove barriers for families ready to make a lifelong commitment to a shelter pet.

The Back-to-School Fair is free and open to the public. Families are encouraged to bring their children and pets and enjoy an afternoon of community, fun and, of course, plenty of wagging tails.
