November is Adopt a Senior Pet Month, but at Gulf Coast Humane Society, saying yes to senior pets is something we do throughout the year.
Many of the senior dogs and cats who come to GCHS arrive through our shelter partners. When we have the ability to help, age alone is never a reason for us to say no. In fact, we happily welcome older animals who may need medical care before they are ready for adoption, understanding that finding the right home may take a little longer.
We believe they are worth it.
Senior pets can be some of the best companions. Their personalities are already established. Many have spent years living in homes and are past the puppy or kitten stages of life. They may prefer a slower walk, a comfortable place on the couch, or simply being near their person.
Yet we understand that adopting an older pet can come with questions. How much time will we have together? What happens if medical needs arise? Can I afford the veterinary care that an aging pet may eventually need?
Those concerns are exactly why Gulf Coast Humane Society created the Silver Paws VIP Program.
Through Silver Paws VIP, adults age 65 and older can adopt a GCHS senior pet age seven or older with no adoption fee. But waiving the adoption fee is only a small part of the program. The real commitment begins after the pet goes home.
Gulf Coast Humane Society provides veterinary care for that pet for the rest of its life through our full-service Veterinary Clinic. From wellness exams and vaccinations to diagnostics, medications, dental care, treatment for illness, and eventually end-of-life care, GCHS remains a partner throughout the pet’s life.
That commitment allows an adopter to say yes to the right companion without the uncertainty of future veterinary expenses standing in the way.
During the first year of Silver Paws VIP, 88 senior pets were placed through adoption or foster care. So far this year, 71 senior pets have been adopted, and another 19 have spent time in foster homes through our senior foster initiative.
Foster care is an important part of Silver Paws as well. Not every placement has to be permanent to make a difference. Some senior pets need a temporary home while recovering from a medical procedure. Some benefit from a break from the shelter environment. Others simply need a comfortable place to stay while they wait for adoption.
For the person fostering, it can provide companionship without the long-term commitment of adoption. For the pet, it provides time in a home, individual attention, and a comfortable place to rest. It truly can be a win for both.
There is something particularly special about pairing a senior person with a senior pet. Neither needs to keep up with the expectations of youth. They can simply enjoy each other’s company.
We also recognize that when someone opens their home to a senior pet, the amount of time they have together may be uncertain. Some will share many years. Others may have considerably less.
We don’t believe that makes the relationship less valuable.
Whether it is measured in years or months, that time can mean a senior pet spends this chapter of life loved, comfortable, and cherished. In return, that pet provides companionship, routine, affection, and all of the things that make sharing our lives with animals so meaningful.
Silver Paws VIP is a program we believe deeply in, but it is also a significant financial commitment. Every senior pet enrolled represents a promise from Gulf Coast Humane Society to provide veterinary care for the remainder of that animal’s life.
We are fortunate to have partners who believe in that promise, too. Silver Paws VIP is supported through our partnership with United Way and Beesley’s Paw Prints, with generous support from Carol Beesley. Gulf Coast Humane Society was also selected as a 2026–2027 grantee of The Grey Muzzle Organization, a national nonprofit dedicated to improving the lives of senior dogs.
Their support helps make Silver Paws possible, but sustaining and growing the program requires continued community support.
There are several ways to help. Adults age 65 and older can consider adopting a senior pet through Silver Paws VIP. Those who aren’t ready for a permanent commitment can ask about fostering. And anyone can support the program through a donation designated to Silver Paws VIP, helping fund the lifetime veterinary care that allows us to continue saying yes to senior pets.
This November, I encourage you to look beyond age when considering your next companion. A senior pet may come with a little less time, but that doesn’t make the time you have together any less meaningful.
