Acrylic Painting with Pat Smelkoff: Beginning Zhostovo: Metal Tray

Discover the elegance and drama of the traditional Russian decorative technique known as Zhostovo in this multi-week painting series. Inspired by the beautifully hand-painted metal trays of Zhostovo painting, students will learn the signature “Russian Stroke” method used to create lush, dimensional floral designs set against rich, dark backgrounds.
Throughout the series, you’ll build skills step by step — practicing brush control, double-loading techniques, blending, highlights, and shadow work — before applying your knowledge to design and completing your own decorative tray. We’ll explore traditional compositions, color harmony, and the bold contrast that makes this style so striking.
Perfect for beginners ready to learn foundational stroke work as well as experienced painters wanting to expand their decorative painting repertoire. By the end of the course, you’ll leave with a beautifully painted tray and the confidence to continue exploring this timeless folk art tradition.
