COMMUNITY LEADERS AND BOYS & GIRLS CLUB MEMBERS JOINED NANCY LIEBERMAN FOR A DREAM COURT RIBBON CUTTING AT PARK MEADOWS COMMUNITY CLUB
Basketball Hall of Famer Nancy Lieberman dedicated her charitable foundation’s 140th Dream Court, providing children and teens in Fort Myers with opportunities to improve their athletic, social and interpersonal skills.
On June 10, Lieberman joined community leaders and local youth to celebrate the completion of a new basketball court, called a Dream Court, at Park Meadows Community Club, the flagship location for Boys & Girls Clubs of Lee County. After a ribbon-cutting event, youth attending the club’s Summer Enrichment Camp participated in a one-hour basketball clinic focusing on fundamentals like dribbling, passing, shooting, footwork and defensive positioning.
The Dream Court is high school regulation size, 50-by-84 feet, with two basketball goals. It features a high-performance PowerGame surface from Sport Court in dark blue and steel blue, with the Dream Court logo as its centerpiece and Boys & Girls Clubs logos along the sideline.
Nancy Lieberman Charities, along with support from generous local donors, raised the funds to complete the project. Additionally, Boys & Girls Clubs of Lee County expects to receive a $200,000 appropriation from the State of Florida to provide a pavilion covering the entire court.
Nancy Lieberman Charities funds construction of basketball courts across the country through an initiative that democratizes access to basketball for girls and boys. The courts offer an affordable, secure space for recreation while providing opportunities to cultivate essential skills learned through sports, such as teamwork, sportsmanship, leadership, discipline and confidence.
“The basketball courts we build, the Dream Courts, are all about hope, about belief, about challenging yourself to be a better teammate, a better friend, a better competitor,” said Lieberman, who is president and CEO of Nancy Lieberman Charities. “Life is competitive. If you’re a little girl on a Dream Court and you’re competing against boys at 7, 8, 9, 10 years old… you’re going to be competing with them for jobs, for opportunities. If you’re 21, 22 years old, you’re not going to be afraid because you’ve been doing this since you were seven.”
Since 2010, the foundation has funded construction of 140 Dream Courts, including six in Florida. Boys & Girls Clubs of Lee County was selected as one of 10 organizations receiving Dream Courts in 2026.
Lieberman is a two-time Naismith Basketball Hall of Famer, two-time Olympian and two-time National Player of the Year at Old Dominion University. She was a WNBA player, coach and general manager, and later became the second female assistant coach in NBA history and a sports broadcaster for major networks. The author of “Playbook for Success: A Hall of Famer’s Business Tactics for Teamwork and Leadership,” Lieberman currently coaches the Dallas Power of the BIG3 basketball league while serving as a board member for the National Basketball Retired Players Association and Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame.
Nancy Lieberman Charities focuses on improving outcomes for underserved youth in the areas of education, mental health and wellness, and career and life preparedness. The nonprofit endeavors to craft transformative initiatives that nurture an ethos of inclusivity encompassing racial and gender equality, social justice and civic involvement.
The Dream Court is the newest addition to Park Meadows Community Club, which features enclosed activity centers, a gathering hall, innovation lab, culinary center, youth playground, community conference room, game room, academic center, health and wellness center, “big dreams hub,” creative corner and sports field. A teen center is currently under construction at the site.
“Historically, sports has served as a unifying force, regardless of race, color or creed,” said Denise Gergley, CEO of Boys & Girls Clubs of Lee County. “Competition through sport has allowed us to see past our differences and achieve one common goal – overcoming adversity.”
